Hey everyone. I’m here with a life update to share with you what has been going on with me recently and what inspired one of my previous posts.
The first update is I got a job! Yes, I’m currently working with Engineering Consultants in Malaysia. By the time this goes up, I would have just gotten home from my first day of work which is something huge for me. A little story time here.
The second update is I was supposed to travel to Lusaka on the 13th of August but my flight got cancelled so that didn’t happen. I had even started planning a “Lusaka Diaries” series for the blog but that won’t happen. The flight being cancelled was extremely devastating for me. The initial plan was for me to go back home and do my internship there. I was going to work from Lusaka because it can be difficult for international students to get internship places here. So, I initially applied to 2 companies here then stopped applying once it was confirmed that I would be going home.
A month before my travel date and a week after buying the ticket, I was told that the flight from Dubai to Lusaka was cancelled because of increasing covid-19 cases in Lusaka. Now, so many things were linked to my going home and in my head, I was already in my room, in my parent’s house. I had a lot running through my mind and I was so confused. The first thing was frustration. I just wanted to go home because I had been “stuck” in the house for months and I haven’t been home in over a year. Soon after I started worrying about what happens with my internship if I couldn’t get a place in Malaysia. I started telling myself I may have to push the internship forward, which meant taking an extra semester, which also meant graduating later than planned which of course, was no problem.
At the beginning of the last semester, I had been praying for God to help me find somewhere to work here or get me home. So one night, in the middle of my frustration and confusion, I looked up good engineering consultants in Malaysia and settled on 3 companies. I sent applications to them in the morning without even following the standard university procedure because I was just stressed. All this mess is what inspired the post When Things Don’t Go As Planned.
Literally a week after that post and reading tonnes of scripture and poems about not worrying, I got accepted to one of the places I applied to when I was frustrated and confused.
Long story short, I started my internship today and it ends in November. I’m hoping it’s a good experience and I don’t get tired of waking up early. This is a new challenge for me and in a new environment so I have mixed feelings about this. Still, I’m hoping it all goes well.
Another update is I bought my first pair of flats/loafers in over 2 years. My shoe wardrobe consists of sneakers mostly so I had to buy shoes that were more office friendly. It was so hard to settle on which ones to get because quite frankly, I didn’t like any. This was a matter of needs instead of wants so sadly, preference was thrown out of the window.
I didn’t get to go home but I surprisingly found work so, I won either way. A little reminder from a previous post, “Here’s another thing about life, it happens the way it should.” If you haven’t read When Things Don’t Go as Planned, Click here to read.
I’ll probably carry you along to work with me someday and just update you with how the experience is going.
Thank you for reading!
This post is dedicated to my beautiful friend and housemate Njavwa who did everything she could to make sure my first day went well for me. I hope you all meet a Njavwa in your lives.
